Long Beach got its name at the turn of the 20th century, when the town’s original port was established. It began to be known as “Iowa by the Sea,” due to waves of Midwestern tourists coming to enjoy Long Beach’s beautiful beach. All that changed when oil was discovered, which thrust Long Beach into an era of prosperity as an oil town.
An earthquake in 1933 destroyed a huge portion of downtown buildings, which were then rebuilt in the popular Art Deco Style. Originally built in 1923, Hotel Royal has retained this classic modern style, and our hotel in downtown Long Beach continues to celebrate our rich history and heritage as a modern getaway and port city.
